Studying French in Paris?

A reader of mine once asked:

“I live in Paris and I need a good school to study French which is not expensive, more like 500 800 euro for month.”

Now for those of you who live in second or third world countries, this might seem VERY expensive for you. It’s the normal price, however, to study languages in France.

Anyway, my answer to him is:

You should look up the Alliance Francaise, which has a great reputation and from what I hear affordable prices. Also Google “cheap French classes in Paris” for a variety of answers. But another question I would ask is, do you really need a classroom or are you open to other ways of learning French?

You can get a relatively inexpensive Pimsleur French language course and supplement it with learning materials that you can find there in Paris or free online language exercises. Then you can find a French person who would be willing to help you practice at your level. This works especially well if they want to learn your language also so you can trade. I have been a French teacher for many years and always recommend Pimsleur for people who want to learn the language on their own.

I would also recommend:

Rosetta Stone – their newest version is the best piece of learning technology on the planet. I recommend you get the beginner level and see whether that works for you.

Michel Thomas – he developed an outstanding method for learning languages by repeating words.

Remember, persistence is key here. PERSISTENCE AND CONSISTENCY!

For a start, you can take this piece on finding public records and translate it into French! Good luck.
